Boats come in countless shapes and sizes, but there are far less options for modern recreational boating hulls. Two of the most popular hull materials are aluminum and fibreglass, but what’s the difference between them and why would you choose one over the other?

Aluminum Hulls

Found across Canada and used in boats ranging from small duck hunting jons to large adventure fishing vessels, aluminum is one of the most popular hull materials for good reason.

Aluminum boats weigh much less than an equally sized fibreglass boat, which offers a lot of benefits depending on your application. It allows for a smaller outboard for less expensive repowering and operating costs and can also be moved easier.

Maintenance and care are also much easier for an aluminum boat. You won’t have to wax and polish gel coat, and aluminum dents are not as costly to repair as cracked or broken fibreglass, a particularly important consideration for newer boaters.

Lastly, since they are smaller and more plentiful, aluminum boats are usually less expensive to buy.

Fibreglass Hulls

A large majority of recreational boaters prefer fibreglass boats. From their clean looks to unique characteristics, there are quite a few benefits that separate them from their aluminum counterparts.

With less lift and a more stable base, a heavier fibreglass boat cuts through water for a smoother, more comfortable ride.

The molding process also makes it much easier to manufacture fibreglass boats into unique and complex designs. This means added features designed for a more enjoyable boating experience.

Lastly, fibreglass boats are better suited to spend long periods in the water due to their natural anti-corrosion properties.

There is no right or wrong, better or worse, hull material – the best choice really comes down to your specific needs and priorities. Towing, fishing or cruising, both aluminum and fibreglass boats will get you out on the water enjoying the day.
